outoftheswamlows is our personal travel blog. We don’t sell anything, show ads, or share your information for marketing. This page explains what the site collects and why.
Who we are
This site is run by Alison and Dave. Our website address is https://www.outoftheswamlows.com.
Comments
When you leave a comment, we keep the name, email address and comment you enter, plus your IP address and browser details, which help catch spam. Your email address is never shown publicly. Your first comment waits for our approval; after that, your comments appear right away.
Comments are checked for spam by Akismet, a service run by Automattic, which receives the comment and the details above. Automattic’s privacy policy explains how they handle it.
Comments are kept so the conversations on each chapter stay readable. If you’d like yours removed, just ask (see Contact us below).
Cookies
Cookies are small files a website stores in your browser. This site uses:
- Comment cookies, only if you tick “Save my name and email in this browser” when commenting. They remember your name and email for a year so you don’t have to retype them.
- Google Analytics cookies, for visitor statistics (below).
- Login cookies, only for the two of us when we log in to write.
Email subscriptions
If you sign up to get new chapters by email, your email address is stored by Jetpack, a WordPress.com service run by Automattic, which sends the emails for us. We only use it to tell you about new chapters. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing removes you from the list. Automattic’s privacy policy applies.
Visitor statistics
We use Google Analytics to see how many people visit and which chapters they read. It records things like the pages you view, your approximate location (city or country), and your device and browser. We only see totals, never who you are. Google’s privacy policy explains how Google handles it, and you can opt out of Google Analytics on every site with Google’s opt-out browser add-on.
Instagram and other sites
Our Instagram page shows recent posts from @outoftheswamlows. Clicking one opens Instagram, which has its own privacy policy. Chapters also link to other websites, and Dave’s Travel Data and Photo Gallery are separate sites; once you follow a link, that site’s own policy applies.
Server logs and backups
Like most websites, our server keeps a short-lived log of visits (IP address, the page requested, and browser) for security and troubleshooting. Backups of the site, which include comments, are kept for up to 14 days.
Your choices
You can ask us for a copy of the personal information we hold about you (in practice, your comments and the details sent with them), or ask us to delete it. We’ll take care of it and let you know when it’s done.
